I'm thinking about allowing users to be able to choose their own avatar at the beginning of my course.  I have images set up that highlight when the user rolls over each and then a variable set up when the user clicks the avatar they'd like to use.  What I'm not sure about is how to have that variable tell which picture to use from the group.  I see that the variable is set to the name of the image but also includes additional letters/numbers so I'm not sure how to point to a single image. Let me know if I'm on the right track here or if there is a better way to go about this:

You're really close, you just have an extra piece. All you need is the index, not the object directly. So if you click the 4th avatar, you only need to store "4". Use the "index of..." block.

And then later, you can tell item #4 to show in a new tag list. Use the "get item..." block. See the image below. I changed the tag names a little, so they might be swapped with yours.
